Is Salmon High in Potassium?

How Many Types of Salmon Are There?

There are six different types of salmon that humans fish and eat. Certain types of salmon have more potassium per 100 grams than others. If you’re curious to know which type of salmon has the most potassium, here’s a list of the different types and their potassium content:

  • Atlantic Salmon – 363 mg
  • Chinook Salmon – 175 mg
  • Chum Salmon – 429 mg
  • Coho Salmon – 460 mg
  • Pink Salmon – 439 mg
  • Sockeye Salmon 408 mg

The two most commonly eaten types of salmon are the Atlantic and Pink salmon, so regardless of which one, you’ll get a hefty dose of potassium per 100 grams.

Is Salmon Healthy?

Salmon is one of those meats that many people use when they’re trying to eat better. This is partly because salmon is an excellent source of protein that can help build muscle and prevent your body’s muscles from deteriorating.

When Did Humans Start Eating Salmon?

There’s not a lot of information about when most parts of the world began eating salmon, but there is evidence that could pinpoint when ancient people began eating them in North America.

Historians and archeologists have found evidence that humans in North America were fishing and eating salmon as far back as 11,500 years ago. They found fossilized bones of Chum Salmon in Alaska, suggesting that this theory is correct. Along with the salmon bones, they have found human bones and tools that would suggest they had a way to fish for these fish.

Who Eats the Most Salmon?

It’s easy to assume that the countries that eat the most salmon are in Asia due to loving fish meals and sushi. Surprisingly, this is not the case. The areas of the world that eat the most salmon are countries in Europe such as Norway, Sweden, and The Netherlands, to name a few, and the United States.

Norway is known for fresh seafood, especially salmon. One of the most popular salmon dishes in Norway is Gravlax. Gravlax is a traditional Norwegian dish where the salmon is served raw. You’ll cure the salmon in a mixture of salt, pepper, and a hefty dose of dill for a few hours before serving.

Traditionally, this will be served in very thin slices on top of grain bread and mustard sauce or with Norwegian potato salad.

Traveling South from Norway, France is another country that loves eating salmon. If you have ever been or plan to go to France, you’ll find that salmon is on almost every restaurant’s menu that sells seafood. One of the best French salmon dishes is called Salmon and Sorell Troisgros.

Invented in the 1970s, this dish looks elegant and as if it took hours to prepare, when in fact it’s very easy to make. To prepare the salmon, you’ll cook the fish in a pan with your seasonings of choice and plenty of oil to get a nice sear. The sauce is the perfect addition to the dish.

The sauce is comprised of mushrooms, white wine, shallots, cream, and sorrel. All you have to do is pour this sauce over the salmon and eat. Adding a dash of lemon juice over the top of the finished dish is common.

Finally, you can’t forget Japan. Originally, salmon was not part of sushi recipes in Japan. It wasn’t until the 1980s when Norway was the country to introduce Japan to salmon, and they started incorporating it into their sushi. Sashimi is a popular way to eat salmon.

Sashimi is raw salmon that is sliced thin. It’s usually served with pickled ginger, soy sauce, and wasabi. While you can eat it as your main course if you choose, it’s commonly served as an appetizer in Japan.

If you love Indian cuisine and salmon, you need to try this dish. Salmon Tandoori is simple to make but tastes as if it came from a five-star restaurant. This dish is salmon filets marinated in a yogurt marinade with various Indian spices and seasonings. Then you’ll bake the salmon with the yogurt marinade on top until it’s nice and crispy.
