Are Potatoes High in Nickel?

Potatoes are one of the most versatile vegetables because let’s be honest, they taste like a little slice of heaven regardless of how you prepare them. I may be a little biased, but I’ve never met a potato dish I didn’t like. We’re taught our entire lives to eat our veggies because the majority of them are high in nutrients that keep our bodies healthy.

Potatoes are generally healthy, depending on how you prepare them, but what about those with a nickel allergy or sensitivity?

The answer to this question isn’t black and white. Depending on where you’re from and where you get your potatoes from, they may have a high nickel content, or they may not. There have been studies conducted in the United Kingdom (UK) surrounding the nickel content in popular foods. The average nickel content in potatoes in the UK is 0.10 mg. That amount is not considered a high nickel content. It falls right in the middle.

Some studies suggest this may be true for some potatoes in the United States, but the nickel content of potatoes in the United States may likely be higher than that. The soil that the potatoes are grown in can have a significant impact on their nickel content.

What is the Recommended Daily Intake of Nickel?

Nickel is a mineral that is present in a lot of our everyday foods. It’s nothing to be too wary of because the amount you’ll find in most foods is very small and won’t cause you any problems unless you’re sensitive to nickel or have an allergy. The recommended daily intake (RDI) of nickel is 25 to 35 micrograms, which is approximately 0.025 to 0.035 mg.

How Do They Classify High, Medium, and Low Nickel Content?

How do we know what amount of mg is high, medium, or low nickel content? Here’s the breakdown:

  • High Nickel Content: More than .50 mg
  • Medium Nickel Content: Between 0.10 and 0.15 mg
  • Low Nickel Content: Less than 0.10 mg

So, based on this information, pretty much everything we eat may have a higher nickel content than the recommended daily intake. But, if you’re following a low nickel diet or are monitoring your nickel intake, sticking with low to medium nickel content foods is critical.

Can I Eat Potatoes With a Nickel Allergy?

If you’re a potato lover, I have some good news for you. Based on the average nickel content of potatoes, you should be okay to eat potatoes when you have a nickel allergy. When dealing with patients who have a nickel allergy, many health professionals state that potatoes are okay to eat since the content is relatively minor.

Since the nickel content is in the medium category and bordering on low, your symptoms should be minor, if not nonexistent. Maybe just don’t eat potatoes for every meal, even though that may be tempting. Of course, talking with your doctor first is always important to make sure it’s safe. What may be safe for your friend may not be safe for you.

How Many Types of Potatoes Are There in the World?

When you walk into the grocery store or farmer’s market, you probably see quite a few different types of potatoes. But, what you see at these places is just the tip of the ice burg when it comes to how many kinds of potatoes exist on Earth.

Did you know that there are over 4,000 different varieties of potato? Of those 4,000, about 180 of them are known as wild potatoes. One of the reasons people believe we have so many types of potatoes is that this vegetable can grow in several different environments.

It can grow as low as sea level and up to 4,700 meters (15,420 feet) above sea level. Since these veggies can thrive in a variety of environments, over 100 countries in the world grow potatoes.

Potato Dishes From Around the World

If you ask a lot of people what their favorite potato dish is, they’ll more than likely answer French fries. At least in the United States. But potatoes grow in over 100 countries and are used for so much more than just French fries or potato skins. If you want to travel the world trying potato dishes without having to leave your kitchen, except for ingredients, you have to try some of these meals.

Aloo Gobi is a delicious vegetarian potato dish popular in India. It’s also one of my personal favorites to order at my local Indian restaurant. The combination of curry and other spices on potatoes and cauliflower is extra tasty and traditionally is served on rice.

Colcannon is an Irish potato dish that you can eat on its own or serve with your choice of meat, eggs, or both. Colcannon combines cabbage, onions, and potatoes into a hash, and it’s slathered in butter. It may not be the healthiest option but boy, is it worth trying.

In Italy, gnocchi is a popular dish. The gnocchi is traditionally made with potatoes. You can make your own from scratch or purchase some at the store. You can serve it with whatever sauce you prefer, but a butter and sage sauce is a popular choice in some areas of Italy.

Have you ever heard of Skordalia? If you haven’t, this potato dip is beloved in Greece and anyone who makes it. At first glance, it looks very similar to mashed potatoes, but it’s traditionally served chilled. It’s fluffy, loaded with garlic, and drizzled with olive oil. You can serve it with pita bread or whatever bread you prefer.

If you love potato salad, you need to try this recipe next time. Japanese potato salad is a refreshing twist on the several traditional potato salad recipes with have in the United States. Instead of egg, dill, and whatever else you’d usually put in your potato salad, this one has carrots, cucumbers, and onions.

The dressing that holds it all together is a mixture of rice vinegar and Japanese mayo and mustard. It may sound strange since it’s very different from what you’re probably used to, but why not try something new?
